NHRM announces Green Island Biennial 2025 theme and featured artists

On Nov. 18, the National Human Rights Museum (NHRM) unveiled the curatorial theme and featured artists for the Green Island Biennial 2025. This year’s theme, “Duration of 149 Sea Miles: The Struggle of Memory against Forgetting (一四九海浬的時間:抵抗遺忘),” draws inspiration from the May 1951 event when the first group of political prisoners was sent to Green Island. The Biennial will take place from May 17 to Sept. 21, 2025.

Co-curated by Nobuo Takamori (高森信男), Chang Wen-hao (張文豪), and Tseng Che-wei (曾哲偉), the event will feature works by 23 groups of artists, including seven international participants. The NHRM has also invited Chen Wu-chen (陳武鎮), a former political prisoner, and Huang Hsu-hung (黃旭宏), a descendant of political victim Huang Jui-lin (黃瑞麟), to create artworks that shed light on the history of the White Terror.

Additionally, the Green Island Biennial has been invited to collaborate with the Jeju Biennale 2024 for an art exchange program. Participating artists include Liu Yun-yi (劉芸怡), Lin Shu-kai (林書楷), Wang Te-yu (王德瑜), Au Sow-yee (區秀詒), and Tao Ya-lun (陶亞倫). The Jeju Biennale will run from Nov. 26, 2024, to Feb. 16, 2025.
