歌詞是一個年輕人自述住在紐奧良貧民區的自家房屋, 生活每況愈下, 許多孩子為了生活而誤入歧途, 時至今日, 依然是不少窮人孩子一生的寫照。藉此告誡兄弟姐妹和朋友們不要重蹈覆轍, 深深期待著能夠翻轉世代。
這首歌曲由英國藍調搖滾樂團“動物樂團”在1964年所錄製, 是當時最流行成功的商業版本作品。
