你也許有在 IKEA 看過叫做「瑞典甘草糖 Swedish liquorice」的糖果，其實他在荷蘭以及整個北歐都很受歡迎，甚至是當地人每天吃的糖果喔！不過，甘草糖並不像一般的糖果一樣甜甜的，反而帶有八角的鹹味，以及一股濃烈的中藥味，因為甘草糖的原料「甘草根」正是一種傳統用藥喔！甘草糖的歷史可以追溯到 17、18 世紀，當時在英格蘭 Pontefract 小鎮的一間修道院，把甘草汁液做成黑色的小圓片，叫做「龐特弗雷特餅 Pontefract cake」，是隨身攜帶的藥品。到了 19 世紀，英國藥劑師往裡面加了糖，甘草糖便不再是藥物，隨著工業革命時期成為了受歡迎的糖果。而在北歐，除了甜的甘草糖，還有加入氯化銨的「鹹甘草糖」，叫做「塞歐米克 salmiak」，是北歐特有的風味喔！
