通常在面對可能有風險的事情時, 選擇多加小心, 雖然可能顯得多餘, 或比較麻煩和耗費資源, 但是為了之後不要出現任何問題, 還是小心行事、多點準備的好, 這時就會用「better safe than sorry」來說明 ”安全勝於後悔” 或者 “防範於未然, 好過事後後悔”、“有備無患”和“以防萬一”。而這裡的「safe」是「保險的、萬無一失的」意思。
和「better safe than sorry」意思相近的慣用句還有：「Prevention is better than cure」也就是“預防勝於治療”, 常用於建議提前防範, 避免後患。
